LOVING THE SKIN HE'S IN

Volume Three ups the sonic ante with two original tracks. Actually re-edits... but pretty much mutated to become my own. Using them as bookends... I created a pretty trippy stew of sludgey psychedelia within. A gooey peanut butter and jello sandwich.

Take a lick.

YOUR IDIOT FOR THE AFFAIR

This is the second in my next unofficial series. A BOOTY AFFAIR (all titles will be based on songs from MOTOR BOOTY AFFAIR - that's what makes it a series, see.) I like this one a lot... pretty much what I'd play out in a club (which is why I'm currently behind a keyboard.) Been working on Re-Edits lately... so my mix output may be a little slow. I'll post all the Edits as seperate tracks if anyone else wants to fuck with them.

POP, THERE GOES MY HEART

It's amazing how beautiful music is often made from sadness. Yes... I am a New Romantic at heart. An ironic one, at that. What started out a funky little psych excursion was sabotaged and enhanced by the Soft Cell song of my life.

My sadness equals your enjoyment. And mine in happier times.

And yes... there are a great deal of "blank" & "blank" duos in this one. Why?!?! Dunno.

Mmmmmm....Leftovers

Another batch of leftovers... and once again, what might be a favorite mix of mine. The same thing that causes me to disregard these tracks at first also compels me to work with them. Somehow I think they sit in their virtual folder and marinate together... so when the time is right they've aged and matured into something so delicate and sweet.

I'm over-reacting... but honestly... this is the part of the process I seem to enjoy most. That Joy Formidable track is so damn nice... like an early Pixies track but possibly better. Also in this mix is a live mix from Levan... it just don't get much better!

TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN BY STORM

An end to the series. My musical puzzles are getting a bit more complex. This mix took a lot of rework to get to where it is now. Upon a listen I'm proud of it. Maybe a little too radio droppy towards the end, but it begins nicely and closes just as well. The best mixes always master this... as a great beginning and end can often pardon any offenses made in the middle.

What next? I'm assuming a two to four part DETRITUS series to purge my musical banks of all the crap I used in the Sufferation and Wonka mixes... a good way to clear my palate. Like a fresh piece of pickled ginger between two elegant pieces on nigiri.

How freaking gay is that?!?! Did I mention that I love my cats

SEPERATE THE SORROW AND COLLECT ALL THE CREAM

Almost at an end to this series here. This one took a little labor. It's always hard starting out with a favorite track and ending with two equally enamored. I was afraid I'd do too much, or not enough. I finally got it to where I like it.

I hope you do too.

As always, mixed with love and sprinkled in dew to make the world taste good.

DIARY OF THE IMITATOR

The HoDad's from Houston?

My musical groovies over at http://moraladventure.blogspot.com/ asked the interweb for a slowed version of the Beach Boys "Smile." Since I've already tried my hand at slowing up Pet Sounds (find it here: http://nattymari-unfortunate-events.blogspot.com/2008/10/i-know-perfectly-well-im-not-where-i.html) I figured why not.

I used the Purple Chick version on their site - because I can't find my copy of the o.g. SMILE SHOP version. The sequencing is closer to the Smile Shop though. I added minimal effects and hand slowed each track to my tastes (anywhere between 20%-60%.)

Here it is:

Another rootin tootin mix guaranteed to break you down and send you flying across the room in millions of little pieces. BTW: I almost cut that Kaki King song because of the little clicks and pops amplified by the delay... but on second listen it sounded hella-fied Scratch Perry... so I kept-ed it.

DOES YOUR CHEWING GUM LOSE ITS FLAVOUR

Posting this one semi-blindly. I've been working hard on it... and I went to fix it and some shit got screwy. Fixed the screwy-ness... and I hope it's okay. Dubbed, delayed... and I think it's the first appearance of Robert Earl Davis and his amazingly syrup induced Texas slur. "Hellraiser" is the shit y'all!!!! Gather round! SEND MORE COPS

Another fat mix. This one definitely sounds at least a little different... thanks in part to the older funk and dancehall. i really tried to sneak in a Zola Jesus track... but it sounded so shitty I too it out. Sorry, it's beautiful music, but that Lo-Fi crap is ruining some pretty good songs. I hope the hipsters and kiddies think it's way cool and groovy... because none of this music will last... and it's a pity. Another Gyratory System track, cuz dudes know how to use sound to blow minds... take some notice all you C-60 crap recording fashionistas! Tricky worked with lo fi cracked sample and Sir Lord Comic WAS lo fi... and none of it sounds as bad as your shit.

BITING'S AGAINST THE LAW IN THE PLACE WHERE I'M FROM

Well, this is it. Guess I'm a Caballist at heart, not a Rasta Far i. Volume 10 sees into there near future... and the shape of jazz to come. Not too different, but different enough to warrant a new moniker.

That Rich Boy track was the junt of the year. Dudes flow and simplistic and perfect lyrics make it no wonder that the Great Adventurer Slick Rick champions his style. Strange to think that Aphex Twin's IDM is pushing 20 and STANKONIA approaches a decade. Thusly, I don't find the KNUX track or the AZ Rotator cuts as anything more than modern artists influenced by the classics.

As for the future. A new set of delay buttons... a lot more Italo - and some nasty harsher shit. Sit back and listen.

HEAVY RIDDEM

I'm going to continue to call the next few mixes Sufferation... but after this one I sense a drastic change in programming, so i'm probably already onto my next series. The one to be published tomorrow is already significantly different... lots more aggressive and experimental music... lots more dryly effected tracks.

Perhaps I'll end it at 10.

Nah worry, though... nothing but goodness here. That Santogold track rizzocks my sizzocks. Diplo is a murderer. Gyratory System has to be my favorite new artist... noisy and rhythmic... steeped in dub and no wave.

ROCKS IN MY SOCKS GLOCKS IN MY TOYBOX

Volume 8 already. This one has a few longer tracks... but they are so beautiful that they hardly seem to intrude. As much as I'm enjoying this series... I'm already thinking of the next. Perhaps I'll do 12 for the tribes of Israel. Perhaps they will return. Who knows.

Either way, they will affect all future mixes...

And if you don't think Pam is one of the sexiest women in the world... you're fucking crazy!

PARADISE IS VERY NICE

So Levan, Tubby and Screw. The trinity that is the genesis of this series. Just about every mix has been directly inspired by all three. Their dedication to exploring sonic space in it's rawest form. Their ability to make crappy mixes sound sublime and sublime mixes sound like them. The ability to marry poppy radio tracks and deep underground flaver with the twist of a delay knob.

I guess somewhere in the mix is Brian Wilson , Joe Meek or someone... but I'm not going to get all Animal Collective fan boy up in this bitch... but I guess my own little ununique addition is the inclusion of 60's psych and the modern primitives who love it.

There is so much Tubby to choose from, but I'm super hooked on his DJ work at the moment. Although reggae was playing in my house since before I could walk... my personal introduction to dub was BLACK MARKET CLASH... and for some reason I was (am) always more obsessed with Tubby over Scratch. I just love what he and his devotees do with echo and drop outs. And yes - I am adding even more delay to most of the tracks.

The end of this mix is dedicated to Levan... solely by dropping the Man Friday demo in it's coked out tin can ear glory. Before the internet and house bootlegs... this was a coveted 3rd/4th generation cassette. A holy grail among those of us (just a little) too young to have danced at the Paradise.

HEAD OUT ON THE HIGHWAY

Six in the series kicks off with a swirling re-edit of the intro of a classic Odyssey track, only to murk in the mire of some real psychedelic Screw. What follows is a fairly melancholy journey... sad, but warm to the touch. Sure, there's a touch of fun included with Rap-O Clap-O (with some home brew Disconet style mixing,) but the mood invoked is pretty blue and introspective.

BLACK HARMONY KILLER

Volume 5 ups the ante as far as re-edits go. I spent a lot more time working the tracks, and I hope it's evident on "Sunshowers" and "A Certain Life." Big shout to the Idjuts and Harvey... even though the thoughts have been in the brain for 38 years... their musical guidance over the year allows me to tackle this software shit almost effortlessly.

It's amazing how much you learn without even trying. Osmosis is the shiznit!
