GIALLO GORE SCORE

Today I give you a tribute to Giallo horror masters Goblin. Claudio Simonetti, Massimo Morante and Fabio Pignatelli provided some of the greatest music ever committed to celluloid. Their idiom was Italian horror. Their mentor, Dario Argento.

While always lumped into the prog rock scene... the three Goblins (alone and with various other musicians at times) were much more. Spooky, groovy and very soundtracky... their music epitomizes the '70's soundtrack as much as Isaac Hayes or David Axelrod. Their soundtracks also inspired the early days of hip-hop, electro and Italo disco. More importantly, as a movement, the entire Giallo scene (of which their music was an integral part) inspired the likes of George Romero and John Carpenter. It's about mood over gore - but not without a healthy dose of both.

As I peer into what used to be my thumb... I will be listening to this and remembering that horror CAN be beautiful. Care to join me?!?!?

A Series of THUMBfortunate Events

Yep.... I managed to slice off about a third of my right thumb yesterday. Damn deli slicers. Only time will tell how unfortunate it is. I can still mix... and it seems like I'll be able to hit the X button... so it can't be that bad.

Here's the first mix for post human me:

COMMUNICATIONS BREAKDOWN

Two of my newer mixes won't stream. I think it's because I encoded them at 320 and DivShare is having a hard time buffering a file above 100 MB. I'm re-encoding them at 224 and upping them later.

For now, they can be downloaded, but won't stream.

I REMEMBER WAKING UP... IN AN ASYLUM

So it's hard not to talk politics (or economic) when it looks like I'll be pulling a lifetime of doubles to pay for the mistakes of a bunch of suit and tie wearing, Hummer driving cretins. Seriously... what's wrong with 21st Century Amerikkka? Didn't we let these pathetic losers jump off buildings in 1928??? I say, this time, we march them off the fucking building with the cold nose of a ruger planted firmly in the middle of their spineless backs.

But gas is cheap... and our President is black.. so we must be a successful, progressive nation.

It really is like the end of "V" when the fuckers pulled off their flesh to reveal the squamous frightmask underneath.
At least I have music to distract me, if ever so slightly. Not much slowed in this mix. Mostly psychedelia from across the globe and decades.

Really, could someone just start killing these motherfuckers and start the revolution already? Me, I'm too much of a pussy. Besides - I just got a Wii and there's a new HARVEST MOON out. But really, no more talk about how bad Hitler and Hussein were... we're ruled by far far worse.

I GOT A LETTER FROM THE GOVERNMENT THE OTHER DAY

I'm super excited by the graphic for this mix. So many interpretations. Choose the one you like. Let's hope for the best and keep our guns cocked. Just because the face on the head of Leviathan seems friendly, doesn't mean it's bite is any gentler.

Rumor had it Nero could break dance too.

PABST BLUE RIBBON!!!

If a film director can be judged by his soundtracks, then David Lynch is the master. To be quite honest, his films are not my favorites. I respect his gangster, and always check him out. I like his cinematography, mood and imagery... but something always falls flat for me.

His soundtracks, however, are a completely different story. Sprawling symphonies of Americana... the Sam Shepard of the OST. His main composer, Angelo Baldalamenti crafts orchestral and guitar pieces that blend perfectly with Lynch's nostalgic choice of jazz, blues and old time rawk n rowl.

Here's a long ass mix that pays tribute to over 25 years of film. Epic, beautiful and very very American.

NEW LINK. FIXED THE MIX - MUCH MUCH BETTER NOW!

HUNG VELVET OVERTAKEN ME

"ZZZZZ ZZZ ZZZZZZZ" Perhaps the greatest hip hop lyric ever. This one's got me contemplating things I can't express in words. My movement in life. My progression in nothing. The fits of melancholy, only kept interesting by small manic episodes.
My life of madness, tempered by periods of sanity, so short; they would make Poe's corpse quiver.

Really?!?! Probably not. All I really know is that Brian Wilson and Jason Forrest are a genius... and that Guy Blackman song rocks quietly. Add 11 minutes of faux afrobeat fusion, Waitsian carnival sounds... a little slowed DOOM and you gots a mix.

"BEEZER, HELP ME FIND MY PROPER PLACE"

More fan service. This mix takes a couple of tracks off my mate Beezer's blog (http://www.worldofproper.com/16334578/), adds some tracks I know he likes, and simmers the stew down to a groovy gumbo. Some daft punkishness in this one... as it begins and ends with some strange Maurice Sednak play that Mr. B double E-E Z (an intentional hip-hop faux pas.. me knows that BEEEEZ) found in his quest for eclectic crates.

The mix is mostly slowed... because you can find the originals on his blog. Visit... SISSIES!

THE MIGHTY QUEEN OF VIALS

Another bit of id for the masses. This is the proverbial assortment of beer left in the fridge the day after the big party. Drink the good stuff first... because you'll be left swilling pumpkin ale before the day's over. Invite your friends over; only if you want to be stuck with the Coors' Light, while they're drinking all the Stella.

I like this little mix. I especially like that Chrissy song... which makes me smile - because it sounds like a love song to his Braun ("Coffee Maker"... get it?!?!) I like "Slow Down" slowed up. I like a long digidub passage followed by the Stax meets Scratch goodness of "Skank indego."

I absolutely love that Diplo slowed the classic Awesome Three anthem to turn early jungle back into hip hop... slow it even more and it's simply bliss.

Obviously I'm still in quite a good mood - because there're less dark ramblings and more talk of music - a constant source of happy in my meaningless little life.

This is true neuro tarot, It came too easy and comes off far too exquisite. Many songs I hate in their original state... but a simple Screw down renders them gems of mood, melancholy and ambiance. Perfect for quiet morning walks and nights alone.

HEY THAT'S NO WAY TO SAY GOODBYE

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it's come to distances and both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,

your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

93 MILLION MILES ABOVE THESE DEVILS

Punk rock changed my life, but hip hop restructured my existence. Completely invaded my DNA and replicated into funky beat crazy chromosomes. I think, like many people obsessed with the artform, that what hip hop has always offered is options. It's a music form made out of mixing... borrowing elements from any and every source. Over a simple beat, your mom's records can be mixed with pop culture. Become infectious disease.

Almost all music has been touched by hip hop (and it's older brother, jah eternal DUB.) This mix is almost mystic... a lot of slow, heavy grooving. And shit hot damn... that Golden Bug is nutso! Can Gomma put out bad records?!?!?!?!?

No dark ranting today. I'm kinda bright. Almost happy even. Don't know if I like it... I feel like I'm going to get hit by a bus.

FAKIN JAX

DIV SHARE is down or some shit... so I'm currently looking for a better solution. I want to keep embedding the mp3s in the page... but am having trouble finding a good hosting site. Any suggestions?

So I'll share this, instead of a mix. It's my slowed up remix of the classic INI lp "Center of Attention." Classic Pete Rock, with Rob O and Grap Luva handing the vocals. Screw didn't shy away from East Coast rap - but he didn't every Screw this one up.

I'm kind of keen on slowing up classic east coast shit right now. Maybe some Black Moon next.

New mix tomorrow, if I can figure this shit out. 1st zShare, now Div/share... what's an audio blogger to do?!?!

THINKING ABOUT THE ROBBERY I DID LAST WEEK

This one was fun! John sent me his podcast list (in comments below.) I liked a lot of the tracks... so I jacked them, added my own and made this little mixto. It came out pretty good. Why I went into early 90's ambient mode - anybody knows. Maybe because that new Air France is so fucking good. Really does remind me of old FSOL and the golden era of Ibiza!

Some fast, some slow... and I think it comes off sounding a tad happier than most of my mixes. Almost hopeful. Don't worry - that's just because I didn't choose the songs. My next mix is sure to be windows rolled up, with a hose in the exhaust!

I'M NOT COLORBLIND!

The comic irony of wishes is that once they come true, very often you cannot act upon them. Tarot signifier HERMIT. R.A.W. once spat that LSD makes everyone a genius, but renders them completely incapable of expressing their new found insight. Personally, I find the psychedelic experience a mere diorama... microcosm of this quest: life.
I am Dudley's puzzle... put together with certainty, but completely out of whack. In many ways, we all are. This is why I can't stand people, yet I relate to them on a very... well, HUMAN level.
Fuck Margot! Throw the TV in the bathtub.
